We started our series with Fitzroy with 3 losses and a draw across our senior teams, but given the games, it looks to be a very competitive series.
At Tulip St, the 4s fielded and pitched well, but ultimately the big Fitzroy bats proved too hard to control with the Royals going down 9-5.
The 3s gave up 8 in the first innings, which usually would seal the game, but the Royals kept fighting, with Matt Taylor taking charge on the mound, the bats woke up, and by the 6th innings, they had managed to tie it 9-9. In a tense 7th innings, the Lions managed to score at the top of the innings, put them 1 run up. In the bottom of the innings, with 2 out, and loaded bases, an error allowed a run to the Royals to tie it up 10-10. That is the 2nd tie for the year for the 3s.
Out at Merri Park, the 2s could not keep their unbeaten run going, and while they fought back from 2 runs down late in the game to tie it, a late surge from the Lions put the Royals behind 5-3.
And as for the 1s, after getting off to good start, behind 7 innings/10 strikeouts from Lefty, the Royals led most of the day, leading 6-5 going into the 9th. Unfortunately, with 2 outs and 2 strikes in the bottom of the 9th, the Lions managed to get a hit which scored 2, and walk off with a 7-6 win 🙁
All games were close, and this series against Fitzroy looks to be a hard fought. All teams get a return game against the Lions next weekend, but first, we have our first midweeker for 2018/19, with the 1s heading out to Altona on Tuesday to play Fitzroy, game time 6:30pm.
