Match report – 1s v Blackburn – 14th Feb

February 15th:  

The penultimate game of the season saw 3rd place Blackburn from the East conference, play 3rd placed Sandy from the West,

The Orioles visit to Tulip Street resulted in a very tight game, dominated by pitchers.

Sam Street started on the mound for the Royals, and in 6 innings of great pitching struck out 10, gave up just one hit and saw no runs on the board for Blackburn.

James Darcy then took the mound and saw the Orioles on the board in the 7th, with a single, a wild throw pick off attempt, a stolen base, a wild pitch and then a walk for 1 run, 1 out, and a runner at first.

James was replaced by Branden Stenhouse who then  continued with great relief work, striking out 4 batters, allowing just 2 hits [a double then a single] which saw Blackburn score a second run in the 9th.

Blackburn’s import Jake Tuck went the whole distance [105 pitches] for the Orioles, striking out 8,  walking 3 batters, allowing just 2 single base hits [to
Dave Armstrong and Ryan Morris] with Dave scoring the Royals only run in 3rd.

Blackburn        2 runs 5 hits 0 errors.
Sandringham 1 run 2 hits 2 errors.

Coming into the final round, the Royals sit 3rd in the west with a 10-15-1 record.  Finals are out of reach, but they are only 1/2 game ahead of Preston in 4th.  In their final game, they come up against Melbourne, who have the best record in the competition at 19-4-2.  The game is at Tulip Street at 2pm on Saturday.
