The Royals first match for 2016 was on a hot and blustery day at the Latrobe University Preston Pirates home ground.
Preston’s N.S.W. recruit starting pitcher Hayden Godbold commenced strongly working for six innings giving up just 4 hits and 0 runs.
Spencer Jack started for the Royals which saw 2 hits, a sac bunt and a catcher wild throw in the second put one run on the board for Preston.
The Royals trailed 1 – 0 all the way until the eighth, when 2 hits to the Royals and 2 infield errors by the Pirates saw one run on the board to tie the game.
Terry Jeon relieved Spencer Jack in the seventh and was dominant for his 5 innings, shutting down the Pirates – scoreless to the end.
The game went to extra innings, with Bubbie Buzzachero replaced Godbold in the seventh. In the 11th Cameron Beaumont hit his 3rd single for the day, followed by a stolen base by
pinch runner Nick Dunn, and a three base wild throw by the Pirates third baseman and the Royals add two more runs to win the game 3-1.
While Preston out-hit the Royals, infield errors hurt their game.
Royals 9 hits, 3 runs, 1 error.
Pirates 11 hits, 1 run 5 errors.
The Pirates and Royals clash again on Wednesday for a midweeker out at Latrobe, game time 7:30pm. On Sunday, the Royals are back at home again, facing off against Springvale.
