Match Report – Girls get an Important Victory over the Blue Jays

December 5th:

After a rain-delayed start, the Sandy Womens team scored an important victory over a gallant Bonbeach at home today.

The 4-1 scoreline appears quite comfortable but with bases loaded and only one out in the last innings the Blue Jays threatened to snatch an unlikely victory.

A drop third strike out at the plate and a quick throw by catcher Liz Taylor to first saw a double play not often seen.

The game started 35 minutes late but would not have got underway at all if not for Fuzzy’s great work in repeatedly cleaning up the diamond as rain continued to drizzle down in the hours before game time

Wanting to play baseball both teams got onto the diamond at the first opportunity when the rain stopped.

Lara Watson was given the start by Coach Smith and quickly got into stride by striking out the first hitter. A couple of walks and errors saw Bonbeach score one run in the first and would have had more if not for the pitcher’s good work.

Sandy hit back scoring two runs in each of the next two innings through a couple of crisp shots through the infield, good base running and a bit of luck.

For the Royals, Lara was powerful on the mound with over a handful of Ks, whilst Liz was a rock behind the dish and Sarah Anton made a couple of nice plays, one of which Jenelle neatly picked out of the dirt.

DI and Ralph had the canteen humming after 3 pm and the team enjoyed the warm clubrooms for some post-game tucker and drinks.

Our Sandy Royals remain in second position on the ladder and travel to Berwick next week to take on the Cougars.
