What a great game of baseball!!
It’s what I love the most about this game, and more particularly – the game at this level.
It was a fantastic win – offensively lead by Griffen Sherwood who became the hitter we all believed he could be. From his very first at bat he was dialled into the ball and came up with a double and a triple! It was as sweetly as anyone in this team has struck a ball and it was brilliant to see! The base running left a couple of questions; but I’m happy to say the exuberance of the running ultimately resulted in 2 runs for us rather than outs!!
It wasn’t just Griffen alone, he had tremendous support from Sunny, Brady and Jacob, who too found their swings. It is a testament to the hard work, that when it counted they got the ball in play – made the opposition work, and scored some runs!!
Defensively, it was a pitchers game – we only two infield outs for the entire game; Griffen popping his head up again to catch a difficult chance at third base, and Flynn with sure hands at shortstop. All the other outs were by way of strikeouts. Robinson with 6 and Jett with 4. Both boys pitched superbly – Jett keeping the Dolphins off the scoreboard from the moment he stepped on the rubber.
It was such a pleasing game – every one of the boys contributed in some way and I am excited to say that the win meant that we now play finals baseball!!
Which brings me to a small confession …. I believed that we still had one more week of regular season games to go; I was wrong. Our game at home against Chelsea completed our season, a loss would have meant that our season would have ended, the win however means we get to go around next week!!
The finals format see’s first playing second (the two St Kilda teams), and us taking on Berwick, at Berwick next Sunday. It’s a must win game if we want to progress, not something that is important to point out for the boys – but a scheduling issues for families!!
So … We’re Not Done Yet! Our little team that could has finished fourth, and will have a go at knocking over Berwick. I am seriously considering drafting in Wes and Karen …. after their effort a week or so ago, they appear to be Berwick specialists!!
Finally, a couple of thank you’s. Wes – thank you for putting up your hand to umpire our game before our scheduled umpire arrived. I know it’s not the easiest thing to do – but we can’t play without one, so thank you for volunteering. Karen, thank you for stepping in and base coaching. It’s a nice feeling being able to tell a runner who is heading for you at first to keep going and look at second – particularly when it is your son!! Lastly a massive thank you to Flynn and Brady – Marcus, Ken please pass this on – as most of you have witnessed, Robinson loves this game. Having just turned 8 he is at the lower end of the age range, and definitely at that level of maturity at times. He is still working out the team aspect of the game – particularly when his old man puts him in the outfield and in his mind away from the action. Both Brady and Flynn behaved like true team leaders and tried to inspire him to change his attitude and behaviour. From a coach’s point of view it was a brilliant thing to witness – team mates looking after team mates. Whilst there attempts were valiant, Roo is a little more stubborn than that, so, on behalf of the team Thank You Flynn and Brady for showing incredible leadership, and on behalf of my family an apology for Robinson’s behaviour!
I will let everyone know the final details for Sunday, we will look to train on Wednesday.
Congrats to all, Let’s Go Royals!!
