Match Report – U16 State Semi Final v Preston @ Tulip St – 28th Feb

February 28th:

The Sandy U16 State team earned the right for a home semi-final by topping the ladder in 2016.  To earn a berth in the Grand Final, they need to beat the strong Preston Pirates.

The game opened with Josh Meyer on the mound for the Royals, and the Pirates came out swinging.  3 singles and a sac fly had Preston on top early 2-0.

However, Sandy struck back in the bottom of the first  scoring on a two-run single by Josh, a ground-out by Riley Trad and an RBI double by Will Connolly.

A one-run second inning helped bring Preston within one, but Sandy survived Preston’s surge and put up three runs of its own in the second, scoring on a passed ball and a two-run double by Josh, his 4th RBI for the game

That was the end of the scoring as pitchers and defense then dominated.  Josh recorded the win for Royals allowing three runs over four innings, striking out 3 walking two and surrendering four hits. Jai Lyttleton closed out the game, giving up 4 hits but no runs.

Josh lead the hit tally for the Royals also with 2.  Will, Luke, Riley, and Taj scored hits also.

Preston 2  1  0  0  0  0  0     3 Runs  8 Hits  4 Errors
Royals   4  3  0  0  0  0 X     7  Runs 6 Hits  4 Errors

So the Royals progress to the Grand Final next Sunday at Cheltenham where they will play Waverley.  During the regular season, Waverley played the Royals once, for a tight 5-2 win.

It should be a great game, we look forward to seeing another big crowd supporting the Royals as they go for back-to-back U16 premierships..
