Sandy Royals V Bonbeach – Round 15
On what looked like a great day for our big hitters your Winter Royals were held to a tight fought 2 all draw by the third placed Blue Jays.
The Bonbeach pitcher Glen Jones again had our measure for the majority of the game. Some of our players were battling the pitches thrown whilst others were seemingly throwing their turn at bat away with poor swing choices and poor techniques. The team has proven to be better than this and will look to the next three weeks prior to the finals campaign to find their mojo once again. We suffered from the lack of walks issued and also lack of in play ground balls to draw plays and advance runners.
Our starting pitcher this week will be familiar to some of our older readers as we handed the ball to David Housden. He had worked out strongly on the Wednesday evening and continued in that vein from the start of the game. Generating very good pace for C1 Grade and with some other pitches also in his control Dave is a welcome addition to our expanding and potent pitching roster.
A couple of eye raising umpiring decisions from behind the plate saw Bonbeach score a run early but our defence was overall strong and some good plays were made around the diamond.
After two digs we brought on Josh Smith who was also on song and was too slick for the opposition. It took until the 5th dig for Sandy to break the shackles and score two very well earned runs on the back of a walk to John and a cracking double up the leftfield line to Josh.
We surrendered the tying run in the last with two out. The Bonbeach pitcher hit a high shot into deep left field to score the runner from first, a disappointing result given our battle to gain and retain the lead.
Whilst we did manage some junk time runs against the Bonbeach relief pitcher it was to no avail as the game was call right on 4.30pm.
Our hits for the day: Josh Smith, Rob Anthony, Dave McKinnon, Dave Housden, John McLoughlin
Pitching: Dave Housden – 1 hit, 4Ks, 1BB
Josh Smith – 0 hits, 6Ks, 3BB
Rob Anthony – 2 hits, 0ks, 0BB
The team returns home this week for the run into the finals when we take on the Mornington Gold team. A stronger performance will be expected from the top placed Royals.
