Saturdays clash at Tulip Street was delayed by rain but with some good ground work by the Sandy team we got underway just 25 minutes late.
Bonbeach came into the round as a team on the rise and the Royals had to battle hard all day in order to retain top spot on the ladder.
True to our plan for the year we started young Ben Kaplin with an experienced infield backing him up. In three innings of work he gave up just 3 hits and 1 run whilst striking out 4 and walking just 1 in the poor conditions…..another great effort. Rob Anthony was in relief this week and held out a late charge from Bonbeach with a strikeout and groundball to second.
Sadly our always dangerous hitting power deserted us in the face of some steady pitching from the Blue Jays and a number of excellent plays by their young shortstop.
The Royals one run was scored by Matt Kaplin who scored on Dave Morehouses hit. We managed to leave 8 on base throughout the game., so we really had our chances to snatch the win.
In all we had 7 hits, all singles, and only 1 walk, a real change to our regular output. Final score was 1-1.
Hits: Steve Lester 1, Rob Anthony 2, Dave Morehouse 1, Dave McKinnon 1, Cae Eason 1, Ben Kaplin 1
We are again at home this week against the Mornington Gold team and hoping to maintain our small break on the opposition teams.
