Our DBA Winter Baseball team showed they know how to win a tight game when they came from behind to snatch a valuable victory at home on Saturday.
The teams defense has never been in question, yet again allowing just one run during the course of the afternoon. Our pitching is strong and preparing well for the upcoming finals campaign whilst the fielding is pretty much trouble free. The odd throw and play being stuffed up is probably more the result of the recent burst of cold Saturdays and the seemed inaction as the pitchers get about striking out many opponents.
Our seemingly strong batting line-up is showing glimpses of its’ potential with solo hits and some good opposition catches holding back our scoring. This was the case on Saturday when we had numerous opportunities to take the game away from the gallant Pirates but came up short.
Dave M tried to ignite things in the first dig with a massive shot over centrefield which advanced Andy from first to third but to no avail. Then Steve Lester took it on himself to steal both 2nd and 3rd with beautiful reads on the pitchers action but also to be left on base in the third dig.
It was in the 5th inning that our middle order got the ball rolling with consecutive singles to Cae Eason, Josh Smith and Marty Smith. With the bases loaded Steve Lester managed to induce an error from an over-confident short stop and with some aggressive running from Josh we hit the front.
Josh was again good on the mound striking out seven whilst surrendering just one hit from the 18 batters he faced. Rob Anthony relieved and was ever so slightly off target but did what was required to ice the game. In fact to ensure the game was a 2-1 victory for the Royals we killed the clock by calling young Ben Kaplin in to pitch to what would ultimately be the last hitter. Little did we know that Dave Morehouse couldn’t wait more than one pitch from Ben to before throwing out an adventurous runner attempting to take on Dave’s still powerful and accurate arm.
Sandringham are still atop the C1 ladder with two games to play. It would appear from current formlines that the last game at home V Dingley will decide top spot and home advantage in the semi-final. Let’s hope we can hold our nerve and get all facets of our game in tune for this chance.
Hits this week: Dave Morehouse 2b , Rob Anthony 2b, Cae Eason, Josh Smith, Marty Smith
