Sandy BC President, Tony Beaumont summarized the season in his address to the faithful at Wonnacott Medal Night last month.
Below is the edited highlights:
On behalf of our great club, it gives me pleasure to Welcome you all to the 2018 Wonnacott medal. Tonight is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of all our players, coaches, umpires, scorers and all those who help make the Sandringham Baseball club what it is today.
Like most years, the 2017-2018 season has had its up’s & its down’s.
Firstly, through an extensive search we were honoured to appoint John Hussey as our Senior Club Coach for the season with Paul Rutgers as assistant, and coach in waiting.
As a club we have had our challenges, none more so when the council decided to undergo ground maintenance to our top diamond, but with a lot of juggling for our junior games and our Senior double headers, we managed to get through it all.
We started the season with a total of 20 teams, including 13 junior teams.
Our hopes were high with many young players starting to mature and have an impact at the Senior level, and at times it looked promising with good early wins against the reigning premiers Essendon, and the eventual premiers in Geelong, but ultimately it was difficult to sustain this energy level over such a long season, but to finish the way we did was exciting for all, and give hope for the coming year.
Behind the scenes, we couldn’t be stronger, again the committee has all been a fantastic support.
To our executive committee – Julie Lane as Treasurer, Andrew Flynn as Secretary and Rick Wills as Vice President and Junior Coordinator; you have all performed your roles to the utmost of ease and have been a tremendous support to me, for which l thank-you.
Darren Wilcox on Merchandise and Team selection, Ralph Watson, canteen co-ordinator, Michael Socic on our Social Media, Marty Smith on Sponsorship, Greg Street on ground maintenance & council liaison, Steve Smith running the Women’s program, with Gary Seignoir & Graeme Trad….. the club owes you all a big thank-you for what you have contributed this year and over the journey.
To our groundsman ‘Fuzzy’, we say it every year….our grounds are the envy of many, he never stops, from keeping our grounds in perfect condition, to setting up the many junior diamonds on a Sunday morning, our Women’s on Saturday and Seniors every Sunday afternoon….and let’s not forget about the “Fuzzy” BBQ every Sunday’s & Thursday nights.
He was ably assisted by Peter Lane, Andy Holten, Darren Wilcox, Grant Tucker, Peter Arthur, Peter Boyd, Andrew Flynn and others.… thank-you.
Our ‘Royals’ club, once again the envy of many clubs. Peter Mac has had his own personal challenges, but he does an awesome job organising our 3 luncheons each year, they are also a very important source of fundraising for our club, with the support of Nicole Livingston organising our many fantastic and inspirational guest speakers. We had tremendous help from our catering team Nicole, Jan Street, Frank’s Café, Church St Butchers, our bar staff and others, including helpers Catherine Beaumont, Detsy Holten, Jane Morris & Dianne Watson.
The canteen, an absolute integral part of our club and our biggest source of revenue again has proven to be a difficult beast to man at times, this year we found it necessary to employ helpers with Shona Flynn and Nick Socic, but we also couldn’t do it without our team of helpers Ralph & Dianne Watson, Andrew Flynn, Catherine Beaumont, and others….thank-you.
Again, we have been fortunate to have 4 junior boys & 1 x junior girl to make State teams with numerous amounts of Mariners representatives….we are proud of them all.
Our Masters program continues to develop with 2 teams, well organised by Andy, Darren, Steve and others….to Robyn & Jane who prepare the meals and clean-up after each home game, thank-you.
Our Women’s team, have had a fantastic year, making it all the way to the Prelim final again, be proud of your achievements, and we hope that you continue to take this further.
Our two’s, three’s & fours at times showed great promise and were not far off finals contention.
But, it would be remiss of me not to mention the achievements of 2 teams since we were here last year….our U18 Metro team capped of a great season to win the Grand Final in a walk-off last season, and our winter mixed team beating Dingley in the C1 Grand Final… congratulations to you both.
Our junior program continues to prosper, with 3 pennants now proudly displayed on our winners’ wall.
We have seen ground improvements with our new 1st baseline fence and plans submitted to the council for the introduction of a scorers shed, which we are hopeful of having complete ready for the start of next season,
We hosted our 6th annual Charity ‘Pink’ day, once again with fantastic success, although we could not have all 4 Senior teams playing at Sandy on the day, it was well attended with probably our biggest crowd to date, this year donating a total of $4,000 and now nearly $30,000 to date to the Breast Cancer Network since it’s inception.
2018 is the Sandringham Baseball Club’s 90th Anniversary, with a big night planned in the early parts of next season. For those who were present at our 80th Anniversary, it is a night not to be missed….so, stay tuned!
To our scorers, led by Geoff Francis and Julie Lane, we couldn’t do without you…thank-you
Our club Coach John Hussey could not, unfortunately, be here tonight, as he has headed back to the Czech Republic to continue his coaching career, but the club will forever be grateful. To Paul Rutgers, your time is now, we have full faith in you taking our club to the next level.
To the Sponsors who have supported our club, we cannot survive without you, your loyalty is important and we hope you continue to support us for years to come.
The main sponsors who l would like to thank are:
Connexxions Charmaine & Graham
MonJon Security John Moncrief
Church St Butchers Stephen Pocock
Connolly Wealth Management Chris Connolly
Hampton Travel & Cruise Gary Seignoir
Buxton’s Mark Earle
At times, we have witnessed our progression into serious challenges, but we must continue to listen, learn and improve…only then can we gain the respect that we so richly deserve.
We have succeeded off the field, so now is the time to succeed on the field.
We are a great club with many wonderful people, we have a passion for the sport and a passion for the club. l encourage you all to be a part of the ride in 2018-19.
I feel honoured to be President of The Sandringham Baseball Club.
