Despite having been beaten twice, 6-1 and 4-1 by the Sandringham Royals in their two games before Christmas, the Newport Rams arrived at Tulip St. yesterday determined to achieve a different result.
With import pitcher, Jimmy Jenson on the mound, the Rams contained the Royals to two runs in the first five innings, before he handed the ball to reliever/closer Jack VanWingarden.
Young Mitchell Wilcox started for the Royals conceding two runs before Reed Mason took over in the third, seeing the score tied 2-2 at the bottom of the fifth, however then conceded a third run to the Rams in the sixth with the result 3-2.
Branden Stenhouse was handed the ball in the eighth, but 3 walks 4 hits and a fielding error saw more 8 runs added to the Rams total before closers Alex DaSilva and Josh Meyer finally shut down Newport.
In contrast Newport’s closer shut down Sandringham completely allowing just 1 hit and 3 walks in his final three innings.
Final score was 11-2 to the Rams.
In other senior games, the 2s had a good 12-0 win, and the 4s also blanked the Rams, winning 4-0. The 3s went down 7-5.
Next game for the 1s is a mid-weeker against Springvale over at Springy, game time is 6pm, we encourage all to pop over and give the Royals your support.
