The wild Sunday weather continued for the 1sts this week, but this time, the Royals could not overcome the elements and the Fitzroy Lions, going down 5-2.
In a rain-interrupted game, Reed Mason started for the Royals seeing 3 runs on the board in the first frame for the Lions, courtesy of 2 infield errors by the Royals. Reed then settled down allowing no more runs in 5.1 innings of further work.
Mitch Wilcox closed for the Royals giving up 2 more runs in 1.2 innings. Greg Reese was effective for
Greg Reese was effective for the Lions allowing just 2 runs, 6 hits & 4 Ks in 5 innings. Josh Tols was great in relief for the Lions, allowing 0 hits, 0 runs with 3 K’s in his 4 innings.
In 2s, it was more disappointment, as the reserves went down to Fitzroy a tough loss. Scoring 3 runs in the first the Royals played great baseball for the first half of the game however imploded with an inability to close out the game. The Royals pitching staff suddenly went astray, the fielding buckled under pressure and the bats failed to produce to let the Lions, who had been caged for most of the day, loose on the field to devour the Royals who surrendered in the end 12-6, a disappointing loss to a much lower ranked team, and their first for the season.
At Tulip St, fortunes were mixed, with the 4s, after being down 7-1 in the bottom of the final innings, staging a comeback to almost upset the Lions, finally going down 7-4.
The 3s were the shining light on the day, hitting strongly thru the lineup to score 14 runs, and then behind Matt Taylor’s pitching, restricting the Lions to 1 run. The 3s remain unbeaten this season.
Also, a shout out to the Women’s team, who broke through for their first win on the season with a 15-13 win over Essendon on Saturday.
Hopefully, the conditions will not be as extreme for our next game, this Sunday against Cheltenham. The 1s and 2s are over at the Farm, the 3s and 4s are at Tulip St. The girls are also playing at Cheltenham on Saturday. Our games against our cross highway rivals are always tight, so head over and support the team on the weekend.
