The Royal’s trip down to Geelong bought a mixed result, winning 2 and losing 2 from the 4 senior teams.
Those watching the 1s saw a tight scoreless game for 7 innings. Royals starter Reed Mason pitched strongly for 7 innings, striking out 10 Baycats, walking 2 and allowing just 5 hits.
The Baycats matched this effort with Cameron Forbes [4 innings], Stuart Barnes [2 innings] together allowing 7 hits. Geelong then brought on import Rudy Jaramillo to finish the game. Reed Mason pitching into the 8th inning, and tiring a little at 120 pitches then allowed 3 hits which became runs. Jackson Boyd was given the ball to finish the 8th inning but 2 hits and 2
fielding errors added 2 more unearned runs. The final result of 5-1 did not reflect the closeness of the game!
In contrast, the 2s took the win the Cattery with a well-deserved victory winning 8-6. The scoreboard here was not a true indicator of the game as the Sandringham bats fired behind an almost dominant pitching performance from Kynan Wilcox and at one stage late in the game led 8-1.
However as Kynan tired, the Baycats came to life and began a rally which saw the go-ahead run get to the plate before Jai Lyttleton was able to close the game out. Sandringham defense was solid with Jackson Boyd having multiple outs at third base and Jai and Zac Skinner combining well in the middle infield. Consistent hitting led to an early 4-0 lead and a 3 run left field bomb from Boydy in the next innings silenced the Baycats.
Sandringham were clearly the better team on the day however as Coach Sheldon Collins stated…”we must close those types of games out without giving the opposition the opportunity to rally”…..a lesson that hopefully will be well learned and remembered.
The Sandy 3s this year have been unbeaten, but this week found their match in Geelong, whose bats woke up with 17 hits, plating 13 runs. After being down 9-0 after 2, the Royals did rally, scoring 7 themselves, but it wasnt enough to put any scoreboard pressure on the Baycats, who ran out 13-7 winners
The 4s evened out the scorecard at Geelong, with a 9-4 win behind a dominant pitching performance from U16 Aiden Flynn.
This week, the 1s have the nightcap on Tuesday against Essendon at MBP, and then following up with the 1s and 2s at home to Waverley on Sunday.
