The Southern Mariners Junior League and Senior League teams both got away to outstanding wins on day one of the 3 day carnival at Geelong Baseball Complex to determine the State Charter Champions.
In their first game, the Junior League team came from 7-0 down to defeat Geelong Baycats, with Max McLoughlin putting two over the fence as part of a great team performance to eventually win a thriller in a game that went over 3 hours. In their 2nd game, the Mariners dominated Sunraysia for a 16-2 win
The Senior League are also 2-0 after beating the talented Eastern Athletics 8-6 in game one yesterday with Jordy Barnett involved in a couple of “major league” plays and along with Nathan Picchioni. Tim Lane and Josh Meyer all collecting rbi’s to get the team over the line.
Jai Lyttleton threw effectively in the middle innings which got the Southern Mariners off to a great start.
In the second game played under lights last night saw the Southern Mariners give up 8 runs in the first inning after committing 5 fielding errors however showed great maturity to answer with runs in the next 4 innings to eventually tie the game and then score 9 runs in the bottom 6th to leave a shell-shocked Western Mets who tried valiantly to remain in the game with multiple pitching changes…well behind.
Josh Meyer was superb coming in to complete the first inning when the Mariners were 8-0 down and assumed complete control and turned the tide without giving up a run….Jordy Barnett closed the last two inning to complete the 17-8 win.
Rbi’s to Lane, Lyttleton, Wills and Clayton capped a great team performance.
The tournaments continue today at Geelong, with the finals tomorrow. The Mariners have put themselves in a great position in both comps to figure in the Grand Finals.
