It seems that the Royals play best on windy days. On what was another average day weather-wise, the Royals were far from average, winning all 4 senior games against Preston.
In the 1s, the contest ended up being shortened to 6 innings and 85 minutes by rain. When the game was stopped, Royals were in front of the Pirates 1 – 0.
Royals starter Reed Mason was again dominating on the mound, striking out 8, walking just 1, and allowing just 2 hits. Pirates starter Andrew Chesterton was steady, striking out 3, but walking 5 batters, including Callum Barnett, batter number 5 in the 4th inning. With bases loaded Callum Barnett’s walk forced Alex da Silva over the plate to score the only run of the day.
The 2s survived a late 5 run rally from the Pirates, to get home 9-7.
Out at Bundoora, the 3s maintained their unbeaten record, with a 4-1 win, while the 4s completed the clean sweep with a 13-1 win.
So, after 4 rounds of the 1s, the Royals sit 3 wins 1 loss, and 2nd in the west conference. And this Sunday, they face the acid test, against current ladder leader and last years premiers Essendon. In fact, all senior teams are out at Essendon next Sunday in what should be a big afternoon.
However, prior to that, the 1s will be endeavouring to stay in winning form, with a midweeker out at Melbourne Ball Park, this Tuesday against Fitzroy….game time is 8:50pm.
