Sandy import pitcher Reed Mason must be wondering if baseball is always played like this….for the second week in a row, he took the mound in the 1s facing a howling wind.
The Springvale Lions visited the Sandringham Royals at Tulip Street with at times gale force winds making play difficult.
Sandringham hit the ball well, scoring runs in the 3rd, 5th, and 3 in the 6th off Lions starter Luke Anderson.
Reed showed that the wind again didn’t lessen his impact, allowing just 3 hits in 5 innings for 0 Runs. Branden Stenhouse allowed just 1 run in 3 innings for the Royals to lead 5-1, bottom of the eighth.
The Lions weren’t done and fought back in the 9th scoring 4 runs to tie the game up 5-5 the ninth. Royals closer Jayson Arthur was able to shut down Springvale in the tenth, whilst Lions closer Steve Collier loaded the bases and saw the Royals score the go-ahead run in the tenth with a wild pitch.
So, in the end, the 1s won 6-5.
In the other senior games, the 2s had a hard fought 7-3 win.
The 4s were at Springvale, and with the wind howling, took an early lead, and despite the Lions chipping away at the lead in the middle innings, were able to extend their lead late in the game, and then Windsor closed it out for a 10-4 win.
The 3s unfortunately weren’t able to make it 4 wins from 4, however, they did end up getting away with a tie, 3-3. Down 0-1 early, pitcher Matt Taylor managed to close the Lions bats down, helped by great defence by the junior duo in the middle infield of Luke Socic and Zak Skinner. Zak then got on the board with the bat, with a 2 run triple in the top of the 6th, which allowed the Royals to get to a 3-1 lead. However, the Lions bats started to get a few hits, and with a run each of 6th and 7th digs, they managed to tie the game.
Congratulation to all who played on Sunday, it was a trying day for all out on the field, but it was good to see such positive results.
Hopefully, the conditions will not be as extreme for our home mid-weeker against Cheltenham on Tuesday evening. We are looking forward to a big crowd down at Tulip St for this game…..game time is 6:00pm.
This is our 1st home mid-weeker for the season, and to celebrate this, we will be running a Happy Hour from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Beer and wine will be $2.50, soft drinks will be $1. Fuzzy’s BBQ will be pumping out the burgers, so head on down and support the 1s, get a feed and a drink and enjoy some great baseball.
