Opening day of the 2016/17 out at Newport was a successful one for the Royals, with them winning 3 of their four games.
On a day where Newport were celebrating the 40th anniversary of their 1st Div 1 Premiership, which was against the Sandringham, the Royals spoilt the party somewhat with 3 good wins and a tight loss.
In the Firsts, we saw 8 innings where pitching dominated. Newport’s Jimmy Jenson struck-out 8, walked 2 and allowed 7 hits. In response, Reed Mason debut for the Royals was stunning, striking out 10, walking 2 and allowing just 2 hits. The game changed with closers taking the mound, where the Royals scored 6 runs, and restricting Newport to 1 run in the bottom of the 9th for a 6-1 win.
The 2s had a comprehensive 21-2 win, with Jayson “Lefty” Arthur’s debut with the Royals being a highlight, pitching 2 clean innings and going 3 for 4 at the plate.
The 3s also won well, winning 16-0 behind an impressive pitching performance from Matt Taylor, who struck out 9 and also went 2 for 3 at the plate.
The 4s were the hard luck story of the day, going down 10-6, in a walk off. The Royals got the lead back 6-5 at the top of the final innings, but after giving up 1 run to tie the game, got hit for a “wind-assisted” walk off grand slam with 2 out in the bottom innings.
This week, the Royals start a streak of home games, with the 1s and 2s home to Springvale this Sunday, then follow up with a mid-weeker at Tulip St on Tuesday against Cheltenham, and then the following Sunday, at home again to Preston.
We look forward to seeing you all down the at club this week.
