Sandringham Baseball Club is pleased to announce that Spencer Jack from the University of Kentucky will be joining the team for the 2015/16.
Spencer is a right-handed pitcher who spent last season pitching for the University of Kentucky in the tough SEC conference. A California native, he stands at 6ft 3″ and can throw a 90+mph fastball, complemented with a nasty slider.
In his most recent season at UofK, he had an ERA of 2.45 with 45 Ks over 55 innings pitched and 9 saves.
We chatted to Spencer this week as he prepared for his trip, and he told us how much he was looking forward to heading down under.
“I’ve always wanted to travel to Australia and when the opportunity presented itself to play there, I couldn’t pass it up. ”
“It looks like a beautiful place and I know that people play a game called Footy. When I am there, I want to go to a Footy game and I want to see the Great Barrier Reef!”
As for baseball in Australia, Spencer admitted he didn’t know much about the scene down here. “I only knew about the major league affiliated teams initially. Regardless, I can’t wait to get started with the Royals. ”
Spencer started his baseball career as a little leaguer. “I started playing baseball in my local Wilshire Little League and felt fairly competent at a young age. When I was 12, I was picked to play on a West Coast All-Star Team to play in Bejing, China for a Goodwill Games Tournament. We played teams from all over Asia and ended up winning the whole tournament. This experience kind of sealed my commitment to the game. ”
However, he didn’t initially specialise as a pitcher. “It was only in my junior year in high school, when I became our ace. Then I really committed to pitching.”
Can he swing a bat? “I haven’t been a batter since high school so I don’t know how I fair in the box anymore. I’m not afraid to give it a try though.”
Spencer arrives in Australia next week, and will be joining training very shortly. We welcome Spencer to the club and encourage all Sandringham members to make him welcome!
