I love this game, and I love the start of each new season …
It promises so much, and the most exciting thing is watch the kids develop. But this was an impressive start.
Not because of the win, but because of how we went about it.
It’s never easy to kick off a new season – new teams, new coaches, new players in amongst a variety of unknowns, but pleasingly it didn’t seem to worry our boys this weekend!
Whilst the Rebels pitcher struggled a little in the top of first inning giving up a couple of walks and pass balls – the pleasing thing was the boys were being careful with their pitch selection. The pitches we chose to swing at were good ones, but when we needed to hold up, we did. It was great to see Jacob get our first hit of the season in the inning too – a cracking shot into the alley in right centre, and a terrific way to set up his confidence.
A 5 run lead makes pitching a little easier, and it was terrific to see Robinson use it to make a great start. A couple of strikeouts, and a comeback groundball made short work of Mulgrave – but again, it was the detail that was pleasing. The ground ball was handled well, and taken cleanly at first base. They are the basic baseball plays that we really like to see made.
We added one to the score in the 2nd inning on a wild pitch, after Sunny Fontana laced a ball into centre – he took his chances and extended the double into a triple! It was a great piece of hitting, with solid contact – and having a couple of hard hit balls in the first two innings was a great sign. More importantly, Charlie, James and Angus all had great at bats – seeing a number of pitches and again swinging at the right ones!
The bottom of the second almost mirrored the first with a couple of strikeouts, and a comebacker ground ball.
We were kept quiet on the scoreboard in the top of the third, but a ringing double down the third base line by Sid Stillwell again showed that we can hit the ball hard when we make good pitch choices. It was a terrific shot, and showed that the pounding he was taking behind the plate hadn’t affected his ability to hit!!
3 up 3 down by way of strikeouts for Mulgrave in the bottom of the inning set up an aggressive 4th inning for us. James Fotomaras did the perfect job leading off the inning with a base hit up the middle. He would ultimately come around to score one of the two runs for the inning. Sunny got on base for the 3rd time and came around to score his third run for the game – and with Peter driving a ball out to left for a base hit, we saw more positive signs for our offence.
Sunny came on to the hill for the bottom of the inning and whilst he started a little shaky, he settled in beautifully and got his three outs, having only given up the 3 runs.
Both Nick and I were really impressed with our start – it sets up a tremendous season.
For my part, winning games is less important than developing our kids as players and people – but there’s no doubt if they can continue playing this way we’ll get a healthy dose of all of it!
Finally – a massive thank you to Andrea Stamatakos for volunteering to assist us as our team manager. We will work together to get the fixtures out to you as soon as possible – I would only ask you to let us know ASAP if you are unavailable. Thank you too, to my daughter Ella for scoring – if there is anyone interested in assisting from this perspective please let me know. I’m sure Ella won’t mind you sitting over her shoulder to observe!
Lastly – training Wednesday at 5.00!!
