A win and a loss was the upshot of this weekend’s clashes, but both games were extremely close.
In the Metro League, the Royals fell 8-7 to Cheltenham. Guill racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Royals. He singled in the first inning and tripled in the fifth inning.
In the top of the first, Metro Senior League Kings grabbed the early lead, 1-0. A single by Guill, scoring Ben started the inning off. Cheltenham survived the surge and put up one run of its own in the first. The Rustlers never trailed after that, scoring seven runs in the fourth although 4 runs in the top of the fifth helped the Royals close its deficit to 8-7. An RBI single by Krieser, a two-run triple by Cornelis, and a sacrifice fly by Marty Haycroft triggered the Royals comeback. However, Cheltenham’s Luke Ashen ended the game by getting Gareth Little to strike out.
In the State League, an all around fighting effort got the Royals past Berwick 7-6. Jai started on the mound, and gave the Royals 3 2/3 strong innings, but after 4 innings, the Royals trailed by 4…..fielding errors resulted in 4 unearned runs. Lucas Taylor for Berwick pitched 5 strong innings, giving up only 1 hit.
Things changed on a change of pitcher from Berwick….the bats heated up in the bottom of the 6th, and 4 runs scored, highlighted by a massive 2 run bomb by Kyle, which put the Royals up 6-5. It wasn’t over yet, as the top of the final innings started with Aidan Willis from Berwick tying the score with a solo home run off Josh. Josh closed out the innings after that, leaving scores tied going to the bottom of the 7th. The innings kicked off with a single to Taj, who then got picked off at first. Riley then walked, and then Jai lined out, leaving the Royals 2 out, runner on 1st, and Josh up to bat. A wild pitch and some smart base running from Riley got him to 3rd, and then Josh smashed a double over the centre fielder to score Riley, giving the Royals an unlikely win.
So, with 2 games to go, the State team has moved to 1st on the ladder, and the Metro team sits 5th. Next week, the State team is at home to Upwey, and the Metro team is away to Bonbeach.
