A good weekend for the U16s with both teams having big wins.
In the State League, Sandringham won 8-5 on the back of Jai going 3-3 at the plate. He singled in the first, third, and fifth innings.
Aiden Flynn recorded the win for Sandy. He allowed two runs over three innings. He struck out four, walked three and surrendered only one hit.
Sandy went up for good in the first, scoring three runs, 2 from an RBI single to Jai, and 1 on a double to Luke. They matched its one-run third inning with one more in the fifth, and 3 in the 4th, highlight being a huge triple to Dylan B.
Three runs in the bottom of the fourth helped Melbourne close its deficit to 7-5, however Josh Meyer closed out the game in the 5th with some supported by some nifty fielding by Luke and Gui.
In the Metro League, the Royals scored 5 runs in the 2nd and 6 in the 3rd innings to draw away from a determined Bonbeach to win 14-7, after an early seesaw struggle. In the 2nd, hits to Riley and Josh got the offensive going, and Riley followed up with a single in the 3rd, and Dylan driving in runs too.
Ben K continued to be a stalwart on the mound for Sandy, going 2 1/3 innings, giving up only 2 hits. Riley pitched in with an innings and no hits…..the pitching staff gave up only 2 hits for the game.
All in all, a good weekend for the teams.
And to top it off, a special mention to Josh Meyer. Josh has been playing in the 2s as well this season, and this weekend was on the bench for the 1s also. In a tense game yesterday at Tulip St, the 1s were trailing 1-0 to Doncaster coming to the bottom on the 9th. The Doncaster pitcher, import Justin Lawrence, had given up 1 hit in 8 innings in a stellar performance. Coach Matt Sheldon Collins gave Josh the call to lead off the 9th innings, and Josh, in his first ever 1s at bat, calmly smashed a fastball out to centrefield to get on base. That run eventually scored to tie the game. Great stuff Josh! The Royals eventually scored the winning run to take out an unlikely victory.
