Our winter baseball C1 team has kicked off the season with a couple of good results.
Round 1: Match Report 28 April v Mornington
Final Result 8 – 3 Draw
Your Winter Royals started the season with a hard fought 8-3 win against a gallant young Mornington line-up.
Sandy have recruited well this off-season and have added some real fire-power into the batting line-up with Rob Anthony and David Housden signing on for the season.
Alongside this experienced trio we have also added the Kaplin boys for even more hitting and some pitching depth. Charlie Pierson playing for the Pirates did extremely well in holding Sandy to just 2 runs over his 80 pitches. The Royals took to the Mornington relief and skipped away whilst Dave McKinnon on the mound recorded 7 infield outs in his 3 digs of work.
We had some very good outfield catches in the afternoon sun and those infield plays showed a depth of experience. Our catcher Dave Morehouse gave the Pirate baserunners absolutely nothing as he fired the ball around the diamond to keep them anchored to their bases. After a 2-6-2 double play to cap off the first dig the opposition were very wary.
Doubles to David Housden and Cai Eason combined with 6 other hits and 6 walks gave us enough baserunners to record our first victory this season.
Our regular and much valued support team of Andrew Gluth, Geoff Francis, Greg Street and Paul Housden were all in attendance and the team would like to thank them for their work getting the season off to a great start.
Round 2: Winter Royals see Victory on the Road at Pakenham 17 – 2
Your Winter team had a comprehensive victory out at a cold Pakenham today in the DBA C1 Grade. The Royals started well with four runs in the first and then Ben Kaplin went to work on the mound.
Whilst Ben walked the first hitter he saw Dave Morehouse’s throw was on the money when the runner attempted to steal. This was the first of three runners to be hosed by our very aggressive catcher over the course of the game.
Ben finished the first innings with two Ks and his three innings of work saw 7 Ks all up. This was a break out day for our young left hander as he hones his pitching craft under expert guidance both at training and on game day.
Sandy piled on the runs in the second scoring another 7 thanks to some disciplined batting and singles to Rob Anthony, Cae Eason and Ben Kaplin.
Pakenham’s second innings was a fizzer with a nice UA putout by Peter Forwood at first followed by another two Ks.
When Ben struck out the side in the third it was time to bring in another new recruit – Steve Lester.
The Royals piled on another 6 runs off the back of 8 hits in the top of the fourth with great appearances by Ruby and a rocket shot double from Cae.
With his batboy son Griffin watching on Steve showed plenty of promise for a top level pitcher who hadn’t challenged a hitter for 15 years. We look forward to his next outing along with his capable bat and heads up running power.
Every Sandy hitter had a least one hit whilst Cae, Ben, Marty Smith and Dave Housden came up with two hits apiece. Geoff seemed to enjoy his scoring work even with the windchill making it most uncomfortable…Thanks for coming out Geoffrey!
