Jack Giuliano field saw the Royals take on the Mornington Pirates Black team last Saturday.
The Pirates have been in reasonable form and with Sandy having dropped a game last week it was crucial the Royals rebounded.
Our pitching rotation had Josh Smith pencilled in for the start and his bullpen form from Wednesday night did not bode well for Mornington.
Strangely though the Pirates started well with two hits to score an early run but when Josh fanned the hitter to record the third out he hit his straps.
Dave Morehouse was catching this week and engineered the demise of the next seven batters at the hand of Josh’s growing arsenal of pitches. So we saw 8 Ks on end with no-one reaching base in that time let alone seriously touching the ball. A fantastic stint on the mound.
We revamped our batting line-up this week with Rob Anthony leading off hitting a cracking double up the left field line and then stealing third base. Seriously experienced (old) Andy Holten also moved into the top end, then drove Rob in with a nice flat shot over the head of short stop. Moved to third by a walk and a fielders choice Andy then scored after Scott McLaughlin hit the ball hard into right field. So we left the first with a two – one lead.
It was now that Josh took the spotlight. Over the next three digs he struck out 9, surrendering just 4 hits and one run for the day. His pitch count ran down with one out in the fifth after a tremendous outing that spells Trouble for teams we face down the straight.
Rob took over on the mound and promptly struck out the last two hitters with his pace and guile.
Our offence gleaned just eight hits but our patience saw us harvest 7 walks. We left 10 on base which must improve if we are to succeed in September. It took until the fourth dig until we slipped away with some insurance runs. Dave M smashed a home runs over the cones into leftf…..sorry what’s that. Ok so the Leftfielder says it bounced – sorry. Dave M smashed a two base hit over an embarrassed leftfields head , Scott was drilled by a pitch and then Cae Eason drove them in with a nice hit to centre. Peter Forwood had two great lead-off times at the plate battling away to reach base on both occasions as did Josh with two walks.
So victory was ours with a four to one scoreline. The team can still improve and we can strengthen our line-up further with returning players.
The Royals travel to Bonbeach next week to take on the third placed Blue Jays prior to our runs of home games up to the finals.
Hits this week : Rob A 1 x 2b , Dave 1HR2b , Andy 1, Scott 1, Cae, 1 , Marty 1
Walks: Andy 2, Dave McK 2, Josh 2, Ben 1
