Winter Royals – Match Report v Mornington Black

Our Sandy Winter team bagged another victory on Saturday after over-powering the Mornington Pirates Black team.

The final score saw us at 13-3 , bases loaded and two out with our final batter trying desperately to smack the cover off the ball and score some extra runs when Geoff Francis chimed in with the 10 run rule to finish us off.

Standing at two runs apiece going into the third we eventually got moving with two out. Pete Forwood drew an excellent 7 pitch walk to bring up the top of the order. Josh was walked on 6 pitches then singles to Matt K, Dave Housden, Rob, and Dave McKinnon saw us put on 5 runs. There was great patience shown in the batting box which is a real feature of our side this year and is seen in our 7 walks for the day.

The defense was holding up well with Matt and Rob recording 8 strikeouts over the day and Rob striking out the side in the fourth inning. We surrendered just three hits and five walks whilst making some nice plays across the diamond. Dave McKinnon made a high class play from out the back of third whistling a fine throw to Pete waiting at first. With Dave Morehouse on the DL Scott McLaughlin did a fine job as catcher blocking errant pitches and threatening the Pirate runners.

A pitching change by Mornington saw a rash of walks and HPBs beautifully capped off in the last innings when with bases loaded Robbie smashed what appeared to be headed for a grand slam only to fall agonizingly short for a ground rule double….a great finishing blow on a good day for the Royals. We reminded John McLoughlin not to wear that Target under shirt after he got pinged a beauty by the pitcher and then again by the catcher as he shot home on a pass ball.

Hits: Matt Kaplin 1, Dave Housden 1, Rob Anthony 2, Dave McKinnon 2, Scott McLaughlin 2

Special thanks this week must go to Janet Kaplin who looked after the canteen for the day along with our regulars Geoff, Andrew and Paul . We couldn’t do it without you.

The team sits clear on top of the ladder and will travel to Pakenham this week to attempt to extend its winning streeeeeak to 9 games….think of us on what promises to be a real winter afternoon.
