Our Winter baseball team had a comprehensive victory on Saturday against not a great team of baseballers but a good bunch of guys.
Needing to win to give ourselves any chance of retaining top spot prior to the finals the Royals went back to our early plan and started Ben Kaplin who had shown good practice form.
Ben was on song with a strikeout, a groundball to Rob at Shortstop and a beautifully executed pick-off to second base to snare the runner who reached on a walk.
Our batting line-up enjoyed the lack of control and firepower from the Pumas pitcher and put on 7 runs with only one out. Hits to Dave Morehouse and the first of Cea Easons three hits were the highlights as our patience in the box saw us draw numerous walks. In fact Cae was again the victim of having cones as the home run line as some spectators would say his shot cleared the magic line.
The second dig again saw our defence in action after a lead-off hit and steal. Ben struck the next hitter out and then Josh gunned out the runner at second after taking a nice catch in centrefield.
A pitching change had no effect on our run scoring as three walks and four more hits saw another 7 runs on the board for the Royals.
Hoping Ben could keep up his good start we left him in to battle his failing mechanics knowing that the scoreline was irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. So whilst we surrendered seven runs on the back of eight walks many of the counts went full and just lacked that final accurate finish. No dramas as we were confident we could win from that position.
Dave Morehouse took over in the last with our lead still at 14-7. Wanting to pitch in at least one game this year it was great to see Dave throw his variety of fastballs and knuckleballs finishing with two Ks whilst giving up one hit and one run.
Some junk time runs in our final innings saw the score blossom to 17-8 at the final out on the back of three more hits. We gathered as a team to celebrate another stirling victory and receive via despatches the news that Dingley had lost their encounter with Mornington Gold to leave us clear on top regardless of next weeks result. SO in a strange twist of fixturing we could actually get to play Dingley three games in a row if we hold our form.
For next weeks final home and away round we will welcome back a number of our stronger hitters with the hope of denting our opponents thoughts of finals glory. The game is at home at 2.30pm
Hits this week: Cae Eason 1 x 2b , 2 x 1b Rob Anthony 1x2b , Dave Morehouse 2 x 1b , Marty Smith 2 x 1b, Ruby Smith 1 x 1b ………….Lots of walks elsewhere.
We always thank our loyal support crew of Andrew, Greg, Geoff and Fuzzy along with those family members and friends of the team who come down and enjoy the game with us. This week we also want to wish our Minister for Enthusiasm Matt Kaplin all the best for his sojourn to the Middle East.
