Winter Royals Match Report – Wow and Wow Again!

Wow and Wow again!

Wanting to make a statement in the top of the table clash with Dingley last Saturday, the Sandy Royals smashed their way to a very comfortable 13-1 victory.

On a great day for baseball out at Dingley we put one of our strongest line-ups into the field and from the top of the first headed towards victory after scoring three runs. Hits to Twinkletoes Steve Lester, Josh “Sticks” Smith and Robbie Anthony gave us a great start but leaving two runners stranded always hurts.
True to our goal of using the winter season to improve our juniors players whilst enjoying ourselves we again started Ben Kaplin to our experienced Dave Morehouse. Young Matt K was again enthusiastically covering centrefield and revving up the bench.

Each week there is progress with Ben and after striking out two in the first dig Ruby made a nice 4-6 out to send us back to the plate, sadly with no joy as we went down 1-2-3.

Two hits, a walk and two more Ks saw Dingley score their only run for the day on a hit by Jasper Cormick ,wintering at Dingley. Our third time at bat saw us add another three runs on the back of five hits and a walk. It was fun to see Josh torture the Dingley defence as he bunted safely, stole 2nd and 3rd ,scored on Dave’s hit and then as courtesy runner stole 2nd and 3rd to score on Dave McKinnon’s drive to centrefield. It was all we could do to stop him stealing home….twice.

We negotiated Dingley’s third dig giving up two walks and Ben gaining another strikeout (5).
Another 5 hits, 3 walks and a couple of errors saw us pile on 7 runs to put the game out of reach. Our two Daves had their second hits for the day, but the highlight of the dig was seeing Cae beat out a single, scamper to second on Smithy’s hit to centre and then steam two bases home on Twinkeltoe’s hit. The look on his face after crossing the plate will to be treasured by all those watching. Thanks Big Fella.
Rob Anthony was in relief this week and again showed his class by striking out four over the next two digs allowing just one walk.

We had another four runs on the board in the last due mainly to pitching inaccuracy but also to good patience in the batting box….sadly we lost these in the revert back rule at games end when we had them two down. Anyhow it was great to have ten of us stick around in opposition territory for an hour to enjoy the victory and each others company.T

hanks to Geoff Francis for scoring yet another game and Johnny McLoughlin for coming out to just run and support during his injury recovery period.

An all round powerhouse performance from our Winter warriors which will put the wind up all other teams in our league. The flexibility of our line-up and good spirit in the team forbodes well as we head home for a three game stand. All games start at 2.30pm on Saturday.
